General Overview

The Gallery at the Centre is an art gallery cooperative in Elliot Lake.  It is a partnership between ARIEL (the Arts and Culture Roundtable in Elliot Lake) and the City of Elliot Lake.  The Gallery at the Centre provides a place for local artists to display and sell their artwork.

History of the Gallery at the Centre

In 2009, ARIEL met with Kate Matuszewski, the Arts and Culture Coordinator for the City of Elliot Lake, with the purpose of developing and establishing a local art gallery within Elliot Lake.  The purpose was to help promote arts and culture through the community and give the large network of practicing local artists a place to display, promote and sell their artwork.

The committee decided on a location in the Lester B Pearson Civic Centre, the heart of arts and culture in Elliot Lake.  With a lot of help from volunteers who generously donated their time, the Gallery at the Centre opened its doors in June of 2009.

Since then the Gallery at the Centre has continued to grow, now representing over 20 local artists.  The Gallery has also hosted book launches, poetry readings and special exhibitions.  Keep an eye on the upcoming events section of the website for more information on special events at the gallery.

Objectives and Beliefs

The Gallery at the Centre intends to;

  1. Increase public awareness of visual arts and craft activities in Northern communities.
  2. Support and encourage public involvement in visual arts and crafts activities.
  3. Support artists and craftspeople by providing high quality gallery space, education, partnerships, advocacy, promotion and opportunities for sustainable employment

We believe that art is fundamental to a healthy community.  We believe that convenient access to artwork that represents the North and its culture improves our lives, our pride, our sense of community, and the image of our city.  We believe in supporting local and Northern artists by providing them with space to display their work and with resources to ensure that their artwork reaches the broadest audience possible.

Joining and Membership

Membership into the Gallery at the Centre is determined through a jury process.  The jury consists of active gallery members who will vote and provide constructive feedback to applicants.

Portfolio work from applicants must be presented in a clean and professional manner.
