1n 1992, somewhere on Earth mechanical embroidery manufacturers declared February - embroidery month. Since then fiber arts creators have adopted the celebration. We didn't know that when we decided to hold a mini fiber arts festival on February 9, 2025. But we'll buy into it.
The Elliot Lake Arts and Heritage Centre will be featuring needle-felt, weaving, spinning and other fiber arts skills. Embroidery isn't one of them...yet. Fiber Arts are thousands of years old. Archaeologists use the detritus of weaving and spinning to identify cultures and date sites. In Ireland, where linen is significant to the development of the country, weaving was divided by gender. Men used the loom. Women spun the yarn. Whole families were involved in the craft. Quilting is another form of Fiber Art. Fiber Arts sit at the intersection of creativity and practicality. Form may follow function...but beauty runs through Fiber Arts, always.
