The gallery that will be located in the Elliot Lake Arts and Heritage Centre sometime in the fall, will be calling for submissions in August. A jury will review the submissions, and select the best of the best to exhibit their work in the gallery.
As this is being posted, ARIEL is writing the gallery agreement for successful artists. The details of the agreement will be included in the information we send to prospective exhibitors. While the details are being ironed out, we can tell you that we will be accepting submissions from visual artists of all kinds - painters, sculptors, and mixed media artists. Woodworkers, weavers, quilters and other fibre artists are encouraged to submit applications. Potters we want you too! There is one detail that we can confirm right now. In order to be an exhibitor, artists must be members of ARIEL. The annual membership fee is a very reasonable $20. You do not have to be a member to apply, but if accepted, you must pay your membership dues immediately. At this time we can also confirm that there will be a virtual gallery on this site. If your submission is accepted, you will have the option to show your work in our online gallery, as well as the brick and mortar gallery. To ensure you are one of the first to learn that applications are open, subscribe to our enewsletter.

The generosity of an international community of donors is helping us launch our gallery. Locally, Elliot Lake Retirement Living has ensured that there will be a modern, professional hanging system. Once again, they have come to the aid of our community! Thank you!
We are, however, missing one essential component. A complement for the hanging system - track lighting. We are not implying that the Elliot Lake Arts and Heritage Centre is not well lit. Both the Arts Club and Model Railroad Club are delighted with the level of lighting in their studios. However an art gallery needs different lighting. So why do we need to add track lighting? The photo above (not of our art gallery) is the picture worth a thousand words. The artwork that we plan to hang needs spotlighting to show the work to its best advantage. Spotlighting is a gallery standard. The ELAHC does not have gallery lighting. Our landlord, The City, has agreed to help us acquire the lighting. But, as you know, they are fundraising for the Arena right now. City staff are stretched to the limit. So we are helping them out to help us out! We thank the City for its continued support of the re-establishment of the art gallery. The cost of fundraising sites Did you know that fund raising sites like GoFundMe get paid for collecting donations? The recipient never gets 100% of the funds. So we have decided not to use GoFundMe or other similar sites to shed a little light on our fundraising efforts. We are trying something that will result in 100% of the funds donated going to the track lighting purchase. We are asking you to e-transfer what you can to our email. Your donation will be automatically deposited in ARIEL's bank account. How to send an e-transfer Every bank is slightly different, so you need to follow the instructions on your online banking site. (Yes, not everyone will want to use an e-transfer.) You will be asked to add ARIEL as a recipient of your funds. Use ARIEL, for our business name. Once you have set us up, you will be asked to identify the account you want to donate from, then you will be given an opportunity to confirm the transaction. When you continue you can add a note - write that you are donating to the lighting fund. Then push send. You can skip the ID question, because we are set up to accept donations directly. How much will the track lighting cost? Somewhere between $5,000 and $10,000. Our challenge is finding a track lighting system that is strong enough to illuminate from a height of sixteen feet. Our ceilings are much higher than those in the picture. We are speaking to professional lighting companies that specialize in gallery lighting while we fund raise. Fifty people donating $100 each is all that it will take to reach our minimum target. Elliot Lake your generosity is unparalleled. You have dug deep for the hospital, and the arena. You give generously to support those not-for-profits that sit in the lobby of Foodland or No Frills. You ate a ton of cookies for Tim Horton's smile day. Do you think you could dig down one more time to shed a little light on our art gallery? PS - you will be able to drop off donations at 14 Elizabeth Walk in a few weeks. Watch this space for an announcement. The photo above was taken in September 2023 when we toured our potential new home. The facility is bright and clean and ready for occupation now. Yet there is still much to do before the public can be invited to see the transformation.
We are in a position now to begin that transformation, as the City Council voted to accept the agreement we have been working on for a year. ARIEL is officially the property manager for the Elliot Lake Arts and Heritage Centre (ELAHC) and the operator of a gallery within the building. Our list of priorities to fulfill prior to opening is extensive:
So if you've been waiting to see whether we actually got our gallery back before volunteering, the wait is over. Now is the time to join ARIEL or renew your membership. Now is the time to volunteer. 6/30/2024 0 Comments Gallery Update - June 28, 2024Friday, June 28, 2024 was a milestone for ARIEL. We submitted a signed agreement to the Department of Recreation and Culture for the City of Elliot Lake. That agreement is two steps away from officially relaunching an art gallery in the City. The next step is a review by the Standing Committee for Recreation and Culture. That is supposed to occur during the 4 pm meeting, Wednesday, July 3, 2024. The current agenda does not show that item. However, we anticipate that it will be on the agenda by the 3rd. Should the committee vote for acceptance of the agreement, then the final step will follow. The final step is a vote of the full Council for the City of Elliot Lake. If all goes as we hope, that will occur before the end of July. We will post updates as we move through the steps. Thank you to all who have contributed since we first began this journey a year ago. Yes, you read that correctly. We have been working on this project for a year! Once the agreement is signed by the City representatives - we are optimistic that will happen. Once the agreement is signed, then phase two of the gallery relaunch begins. Our tasks are varied and numerous: 1) Call for artists to exhibit in the gallery; 2) Set up the hanging system for items that will be suspended, and a retail space with display cases for smaller items. Searching for funds to purchase appropriate track lighting will be a priority too. Multitasking is inevitable for so much needs to be done at the same time to ensure a fall opening for the gallery. The gallery will be located at 14 Elizabeth Walk in downtown Elliot Lake. It will be housed in the Elliot Lake Arts and Heritage Centre, the new home of the Elliot Lake Arts Club and the Elliot Lake Model Railroad Club. An essential element of the agreement is a promise to deliver, once a month, special events in the building in collaboration with the other tenants. We look forward to working together to add to the quality of life of the residents of Elliot Lake through Arts and Culture. Once the gallery is officially operating, our retail space will also be a satellite location for tourism information and a downtown welcome centre for visitors. Our docents will be well informed and ready to answer questions and provide assistance. Ever since elementary school we have been taught June 21 is the first day of summer. Sometimes it is, but not always. 2024 is a .not always year. The longest day of the year arrives in three days. According to my phone, the high temperature will be 28 and there is a 56% chance of rain. How are you going to celebrate the summer solstice?
ARIEL is celebrating by planning for the City's 70th anniversary in 2025. We are contributing an activity - The Cabin Fever Creative Expo. City residents are going to share their creativity with their neighbours in an interactive and immersive way During the three day event, participants can learn a new skill, polish an old one and get out of the house. April 25 to 27, 2025 - is going to be a weekend to remember. To share your skills submit a proposal by June 25, 2024, right here. The same link will lead you to the brochure describing the event. He is an award winning lecturer, and ignites the minds of students at Nipissing University as a part-time faculty member.
His latest book will be released September 6, 2024. You can pre-order through Amazon now, so you can have our copy on hand for his autograph. Creativity...we are going to be encouraging creativity a lot. Psychology Today has an article about the basics of creativity, you might find interesting.
Albert Einstein is purported to have said, "Creativity is intelligence having fun!" Even if he didn't, that is a powerful way of looking at creativity. Notice that that statement does not limit creativity to any sector or subject. Creativity is a quality we are born with. Everyone of us. "I'm not a creative person," is a false statement. Every time someone thinks "outside the box" to problem solve, creativity is harnessed. When you make a recipe your own, or plan your spring planting. You are applying creativity. ARIEL will be celebrating creativity in its broadest sense in April 2025. We are inviting the community to submit ideas for creative presentations to include in our event. May 2024: Kayt told ARIEL, "This weekend I head to Toronto for the North American premiere of the film based on my first novel (Heidegger Stairwell)" - She left us a link for more information. Writer, artist, and musician Kayt (Lackie) Burgess (she/they) was born in Manitouwadge, Ontario and grew up in Elliot Lake. She studied classical music at the University of Western Ontario, publishing at Humber College, and creative writing at the University of Auckland and Bath Spa University.
Kayt’s first novel Heidegger Stairwell won the infamous 3 Day Novel Contest and was published by 3 Day Books and Arsenal Pulp Press in September 2012. It was shortlisted for the 2013 ReLit Award for Fiction and adapted as a feature length film, premiering March 2024 in London, UK. Her second novel Connection at Newcombe was published in May 2021 by Latitude 46 Publishing. Kayt produces short stories, poems, songs, digital storytelling, stage plays and was a recurring staff writer on the hit fitness game Zombies, Run! She received a PhD in Digital Creative Writing (multimodal storytelling) from Bath Spa University. The Elliot Lake resident has received grants from the Ontario Arts Council this year to work on a new novel set in Elliot Lake. She’ll spend part of June in Haliburton at a dream writer's residency on Hall's Island, an uninhabited island, working on this new book. After that, Kayt will fly to Winnipeg as part of the (Art)Song Lab initiative to join Edmonton composer Aaron Addorisio for the world premiere of their new song. In addition to writing, Kayt runs a private music studio in northern Ontario where she teaches singing, piano, instruments and speech arts & drama. She is an Estill-trained voice teacher and coach who specializes in adult singers, teaching a variety of genres, in both popular and classical idioms. Over the summer, she will be offering workshops in songwriting and opening new coaching spots for singers. Next time you run into Kayt at an event or the grocery store, say congratulations. She is proof that residents of Elliot Lake can live a creative life without leaving home for good. 5/27/2024 0 Comments A sip of tea and a gulp of laughs!Friday, May 31 and June 1, 2024 are the last performance of the two one-act plays produced by ELATE. Elliot Lake's own amateur dramatics club has been delivering laughs and drama for years. 2024 is no exception.
Tickets are not on sale at the door. Let me repeat that....tickets cannot be bought at the door. So don't wait. Get your's in advance so you will not be disappointed. Tickets are a very reasonably priced $20 per seat. ELATE has also arranged for their audience to enjoy an entr'acte. The past two weekends, local singers performed. What surprise is in store for you, eh? For newcomers to Elliot Lake, the plays will be performed at Elliot Lake Secondary School aka ELSS. In the drama room. To enter that space, you have to go to the back of the school building. Don't use the front or side door. There is plenty of parking in the back lot too. Turn your screens off and try some live entertainment for a change. There is nothing like live theatre to make you feel as if you are walking a tightrope. Crazy fun! |
